| From the Conner Prairie website: When Conner
Prairie opens the first phase of its new 1886 Farm and Rural Crossroads
next April, visitors will have frequent opportunities to watch and participate
in recreated 19th-century base ball matches. By the 1880s, base ball (it
was two words then) had truly become “America’s Game.” Throughout Indiana
and the entire country, clubs would play “matches” in farm pastures and
town parks. Unlike today’s game, balls and strikes were not called,
catching a ball on one bounce was an out, players fielded the ball without
the aid of a glove and players were prohibited from arguing.
Conner Prairie is looking for adult and youth volunteers interested in participating in the museum’s vintage base ball club. The club will be organized later this summer and play its first matches next spring. For more information, contact Mary Friend at 317.776.6000 ext. 264.
